DIY Crayon Letter

Thanks to Pinterest, I found a fun project for Greg and I!
It’s so easy too!

I found the tutorial here
and modified it ever so slightly.

The first one we made was for baby Lucas in New York
and we were so happy with how it turned out.

The shadowbox is from IKEA (Ribba, of course)
Crayons were purchased at Target
The rest we already had… cardstock, sharpie, hot glue gun, exacto knife.
We actually used one of our kitchen knives because it was bigger and easier to use.

It’s so simple, pick out a font that you like and print it out very large.
You can trace it onto the cardstock, but we just used the point of a mechanical pencil
without the lead out and traced around it so you could see the indention on the cardstock.
We lined up all the cut crayons to make sure they fit, then glued them on!
Lastly, write the name with a sharpie and frame it!

Believe me, if we can do it, you can do it!

What size shadowbox did you use?

Thanks Jovana! I believe we used Georgia font for the “L” for Lucas.

Love this idea! I have a few questions. You wrote that you got the crayons from Target. I’m afraid if I buy a box, I won’t have all the colors I’ll need as I would like to make it for a boy room using blues and light browns. Wasn’t sure if there’d be enough of the same or similar colors. Thoughts? Also, were the crayons easy to cut? Did you heat the knife or anything? They look so neatly cut.

Hi Kristen! I got the larger box of crayons from Target and it did have enough similar colors. We were able to use a single crayon in two different spots on the letter after it was cut, so you should be able to do that too, depending on how wide your letter is. The crayons are easy to work with. We did not heat the knife. We rolled the knife back and forth over the crayon rather than cutting straight down (I hope that makes sense). Hi, I am worried my construction paper won’t be strong enough to hold up the weight of the crayons in the frame. Did you run into any problems like this? What weight paper did you use? Did you need to use a generous amount of glue to keep the crayons secure?

Lea – I used regular, standard card stock for the paper and it has held up well on each project. Since I used a hot glue gun, I just made a strip of glue down the crayon and stuck it to the paper. You do not need to use a lot of glue. Hope this helps! — Kendra

JUST darling!

I ove this but the crayon paper always rips. How did you manage the nice edges?

How do you keep the crayons paper from ripping?

Hi Joan,

In order to keep the paper from ripping, we rolled the knife along the crayon to cut it instead of doing a chopping motion. If the paper ripped, I would glue that side down so the non ripped side would show. I hope this helps!
