Friday I’m in Love

Happy Friday!

o n e

Last month, Greg had the opportunity to serve on a jury when he was summons for jury duty and this week it was my turn. The Gilbertsons are done for the year with jury duty — though I hope it is longer. I was on an intense criminal case and it was mentally, emotionally, and physically draining. Not to mention classes ended this week and we are in the midst of finals week. Overall, it was a great experience. I am proud to say that I have served on a jury and our courthouse wasn’t half bad either.

Crosby has had such a great week going to the potty and I have been consistently thinking to myself “boy undies are way cuter than girl undies.” Case in point: these boxer briefs.

I have to admit, I planned a killer dinner menu this week, even though I didn’t get to enjoy much of it since I was at the courthouse late most of the evenings. On Monday, we had Cilantro Lime Baked Shrimp and it was SO good! This will definitely be added to our regular dinner list. You  must try it!

Friday I'm in Love Linky Party

It’s our last link up of April – head over to see what the other ladies are loving!

Have a great weekend!

2.5 Years Old

It’s Crosby’s half birthday and he is officially two and a half years old! This concludes the month of half birthdays for our family. April is almost as exciting as October. We celebrate the kids’ half birthdays with a donut to have something exciting happening in the spring since all of the real fun happens in the fall. Sometimes, it’s the little things.

2.5 Years Old

Crosby has a lot of updates this month!

This month was his first trip to the dentist! Kenley didn’t go until she was three years old and really didn’t like it at all, so I wanted to start Crosby sooner with the hopes that he doesn’t think much of it. It also helped that his big sister was there too. To be honest, he could care less about it and did a great job! Since he was a first-timer, he got his name on the board!

Untitled

Another first this month was our trip to the ER a couple weeks ago. As I was arriving at school to pick up the kids on Thursday evening, he was playing on the playground and had a mishap with the slide. His bottom canine tooth went straight up into his top lip very close to the crease. As soon as I saw it, I knew it needed stitches and I do not do well with things like this. Of course, Greg was at work too, so we all headed to urgent care to see what they could do. Turns out, not much. After thinking everything through, I ended up going back to the house to change out of my heels and suit jacket and to put Crosby in some comfy clothes. I dropped Kenley off at Kyler’s house and Crosby and I were on our way to the ER. He ended up getting called back around 7:45pm, right at his bedtime. I’ll spare you the details, but he did awesome and I did horrible. I had to sit down because I was about to pass out. He got three stitches in his lip and one dissolving stitch on the inside of his cheek. He was limited to bland, soft foods for the week and no straw or sippy cup which was actually the hardest part. The stitches were removed on the following Wednesday and we celebrated at Tijuana Flats.

Untitled

Another awesome update is that we have completed the three day potty training boot camp! We are huge fans of the three day potty training method and we started on Saturday. Crosby went back to school yesterday and had a great day. I will have a longer update next month after we have been at it for longer, but overall, I am very impressed with how quickly he’s picked it up.

Other than those big updates, it’s been normal two year old stuff around here.

30 months / 2.5 years notes:
Weight – 30 pounds at the ER
Hair – Light brown and needs a haircut!
Teeth – 18! His two bottom molars came through this month, and his top two are not far behind.
Eyes – Brown
Clothes – Mostly 2T clothes, but some 3T, and size 8 or 9 shoes
Diapers – He was in size 5 disposables during the day and size 6 at night, but now he is only wearing his big boy undies! Hooray!
Likes – ALL of the cars, trains, planes, construction vehicles, trucks, car loaders, anything that moves; Jake Legos; reading books; singing songs; running; chasing and being silly with his sister; really, anything his sister does; riding his balance bike; playing with friends; watching Disney Junior; seeing the animals at Animal Kingdom Lodge; getting an M&M for going in the potty; swimming and playing with the water table; his baby froggie.
Dislikes – Pooping on the potty; waking up in the morning; getting dropped off at school; getting into trouble; time-outs.

Happy half birthday little man!

this picture pretty much sums up our entire weekend. crosby played upstairs most of the weekend with one of us glued to his side. he pretty much played with his trains, cars, and jake legos for two straight days. he really has done so well, but i’m sure he’ll be happy to get out of the house again soon.

kenley, on the other hand, got a little stir crazy, so she and greg headed out this afternoon to see zootopia!

she also accompanied me on my run this afternoon, but only lasted the first ten minutes before she said she was too tired, so she came home and i finished.

The Huffington Post shared a gender reveal video this week that you must watch —

I prefer not finding out the sex until the baby is born, but I would totally want to do this too.

There are so many great buys right now at Old Navy. Kenley has this tank maxi and it is only $10 right now, so she is getting it in a different color. If you’re in the market for pajamas, the Marvel, Mickey, and Star Wars pajamas are only $12, which is cheaper than almost all of the others. The stripe muscle tees are only $8 and they are seriously, so cute.

Emily Ley released the 2017 Simplified Planners this week and oh my goodness, I don’t know how I am going to decide. I am leaning towards going back to the weekly version because of the completely different type of planner this year. It’s so sleek and pretty. I also pre-ordered her book, Grace, Not Perfection: Embracing Simplicity, Celebrating Joy this week, which I am so excited to read!

This boy got his stitches out on Wednesday, so we headed to our favorite place – Tijuana Flats to celebrate with tacos! I think he was very happy to be eating crunchy, flavorful food again.

Disney – March 2016

Over the tail end of the kids’ spring break, we packed up the car and headed down to Disney for a little staycation with my parents. It was so nice to “get away” for a few days without having to actually travel anywhere. We had an action-packed long weekend, so brace yourself for a whole lot of photos!

We arrived at the Animal Kingdom Lodge on Thursday after the kids took a short nap in the car. We walked into our rooms to find the most amazing view ever — animals everywhere! We were hoping to have a room with bunk beds, but two full beds is what we got. We weren’t sure what to expect since we would be co-sleeping with the kids for the first time, but it worked out well. Thankfully, my parents’ room was right next door and the monitor worked perfectly!

Crosby was enthralled with the animals. They were truly amazing to see in action and you could see them from most of the spots in the hotel. He would wake up each morning exclaiming to “see animals!”.

The rest of the afternoon was spent at the pool and the playground, as well as exploring the hotel. Our friends from Indiana were down at Disney for spring break as well, so they came over to check out the hotel and visit for a little bit. We ended up getting dinner at the hotel and taking it up to our room to eat. The kids loved that there was actually a Disney Junior channel, so they got to watch their favorite shows before bed each night.

Untitled

Untitled

On Friday, we headed to Animal Kingdom! We knew it was going to be a late night considering the Hoosiers didn’t play until after 10pm, but we were up early and ready to go! We took advantage of Disney transportation while we were there, which was so convenient.

Untitled

IMG_4513

As soon as we got into the park, we headed straight for the African Safari. I truly believe this is the best ride in all of Disney World. We took over 50 pictures on this ride alone. We only waited about 20-25 minutes to ride, which is really great considering the ride itself if 22 minutes long. Almost all of the animals were out and about while we were on the safari and we were able to get very close to several of them.

IMG_4573

Untitled

After lunch and some kiddo rides in Dino Land, it was nap time. Kenley went right to sleep in the stroller, but Crosby wouldn’t fall asleep until he was in the Ergo. The boys rode Everest in the single rider line while mom and I enjoyed some beverages while the kids slept.

Untitled

Untitled

After the Lion King show, we decided to stop into the baby center since the skies were looking a little dark. Thankfully, we made it just in time. We camped out in the baby center and the kids watched some TV while we waited for the storm to pass. It was still raining, but we decided to head over to the Finding Nemo show. I wish I would have gotten a picture of the six of us under the world’s smallest umbrella because it was pretty humorous. Both the Lion King and Nemo shows were amazing!

Untitled

The park had really cleared out after the rain, so mom and I went over to ride Everest in the single rider line and got right on and off. I was stuck in the front row, which is typically not my favorite place to be, but I survived. We lasted the entire day at the park with minimal whining and arguing. It was such a fun day!

Untitled

Saturday morning, we headed over to the other pool on the property to go swimming, go down the water slide, and came back to see the animals eating right outside our room!

IMG_4654

Lucky for us, the Mets were playing at Disney that weekend too so we worked that into our plans. ESPN Wide World of Sports is home to the Atlanta Braves for spring training and they played the Mets on Saturday. This was the only spring training game we got to see, but deGrom was pitching, so it was definitely worth it!

Later that night, we went bowling and had dinner at Splitsville at Disney Springs! It was a fun place, but it was hard to keep a certain 2 year old confined to our tiny area and bowling lane. It was also raining throughout the evening so we were walking very briskly with the double stroller through the masses of people to get to and from the bus stop. Needless to say, we were all in bed by 9pm that night.

Untitled

Easter Sunday, we headed down to the lobby of the hotel to partake in the fun activities and meet the big man himself!

Before heading home, we went back to Disney Springs to have lunch at the T-Rex Cafe! It was a fun atmosphere and a neat place.

We had such a great weekend. The kids were so good and it was the prefect long weekend away. We are so fortunate to have such great opportunities for weekend adventures like this right here in our backyard.

4.5 Years Old

Today is Kenley’s half birthday and just like that, we have a four and a half year old.

This girl is growing so fast. I had to go back and read her post from her 4th birthday and I can safely say that age 4 has been our favorite so far… which I am sure I will keep saying, but the first six months of 4 have been so different than age 3. She seems so much older than four and a half on most days, just by what she says and the things she asks. Greg and I are usually stumped or frustrated that we have trouble explaining what a word or concept means to her because we have never thought about it before. It is also very hard to explain what a word means without actually saying that word. She is very inquisitive.

Untitled

Kenley visited the dentist this month and needed several pep talks leading up to the big day. This was her third visit and she hadn’t been thrilled about the first two  visits, so she had it in her mind that it was going to be terrible. However, I was pretty concerned about a tooth, so I stressed the importance of her getting x-rays done and getting a good cleaning. At her appointment six months ago, the dentist mentioned two of her teeth that we needed to keep an eye on and she was right…both of them already had cavities this time. As I sat there feeling like a failure of a parent, she said the both teeth were doomed from the beginning just by the way they were shaped, so there was nothing we could have done about it. Kenley will have both of them filled on two separate occasions, which is a bummer, but they aren’t painful now so we will avoid that by getting them done. The good news is that Kenley has asked to go back to the dentist several times since we’ve left, so hopefully her fear has subsided and the two fillings go well.

Untitled

We have officially submitted the paperwork for Kenley to start VPK (voluntary pre-kindergarten) this fall and she will be at the same school. Realistically, not much will change for her, but a portion of the day is free, so Greg and I are excited about that part. She is currently evaluated four times throughout the year now in preschool and already been evaluated on the VPK standards this spring. You know how it is…all about the assessments and milestones. She does very well in school and absolutely loves it, so we are very happy about that.

I’m not sure how, but sleeping has definitely gotten better with age for this girl. She willingly goes down for naps and for bedtime most nights. She can get by without a nap if needed, but sleeps hard when she does take a nap. She also will nap anywhere which she gets from her mama. If we are going someplace and we tell them they need to take a nap in the car, she’s in her car seat and has her eyes closed within the first 10 minutes. She also crawled into the stroller at Disney a couple weeks ago and went right to sleep. As long as she doesn’t fight taking a nap, we will offer her a nap, but I am also mindful of not letting her sleep too long during the day. She really will only be able to nap for another year or so, so we aren’t in a rush to drop it just yet. I hope she understands how awesome naps truly are and that she will miss them once she starts school. Her bedtime is 8:00pm and we are usually still pretty strict with that since she will get up at 6:30am the next morning no matter what time she goes to bed. The girl loves a schedule, I can tell you that. Her brother, on the other hand, will probably be done with naps when she is done with them.

Untitled

Here are some of her favorites at four and a half:

Color: pink & purple
Food: strawberries
Thing to do: swimming
TV show: Sophia the First (I would have guessed she would say PJ Masks)
Book: The Foot Book
Part of school: The playground
Dessert: Chocolate chip ice cream
Brother: Crosby (good answer)
Construction truck: Dump truck
Song(s): Christmas carols & anything Sugar Crash Kids (especially Make Believe)
Lunch: Turkey (I would have guessed sun butter & jelly)
Animal: Zebra
Outfit: The heart dress

I then asked “which heart dress?” and she said “I don’t know, but I want to buy one.”

Happy half birthday Kenley Dee!

our weekend started on thursday night when crosby and i headed to the er after work. he hit his mouth as he was sliding at the end of the day and his tooth went directly into his top lip. he ended up with four stitches in his lip and mouth and we were on our way home. we stayed home to take it easy on friday…with his sister who was throwing up all morning…quite an eventful 24 hours, that’s for sure.

kenley was good as new on saturday morning so they headed to soccer and i headed into work for the morning. after naps for everyone, the jenkinsons came over to play. the girls went to pick up dinner. i’m not sure when these two got so old?!

unfortunately, the stomach bug hit greg today, so the kids and i headed to church this morning and he stayed home to rest. after kenley napped and crosby refused to nap, we headed out for a walk/ride around the block.

Happy Friday and happy April!

College basketball has come to and end and what an ending it was. Unfortunately, neither Greg, nor I could stay awake to watch the end of the game, so I was pretty bummed when I woke up the next morning to find that we missed an unbelievable finish to the National Championship game. However, I’m not going to lie, it did hurt a little bit seeing North Carolina there in place of our Hoosiers, but there’s always next year. My favorite part of the whole tournament is One Shining Moment and I was happy to see that Yogi made it in there. Thank you #11, you will be missed!

I got my first pair of Sanuk flip flops a few weeks ago and it is safe to say that I am never going back. They are SO comfortable and very reasonably priced. Kenley also got her first pair of big girl flip flops (with out a strap on the back) and she loves them! They ice cream is too cute, if I do say so myself.

Friday I'm in Love Linky Party

It’s a new month, so hope on over and join the link-up party for April!

Sarasota First Watch Half Marathon {Race Recap}

Last month, we packed up the car and headed down to stay at Grammy’s house for the weekend. I was scheduled to run the Sarasota First Watch half marathon on Sunday so we decided it would be fun to make a weekend out of it. I registered for the race quite a while ago when they had their registration blitz, so I got a pretty good deal for the race. {Side note: people seem surprised when I say that I had to pay for a race… yes, people actually PAY to go out there and torture themselves. Running can be a very expensive hobby!}

We arrived in Sarasota on Friday night after LOTS of spring break and tourist traffic getting out of Orlando… not one of the best times to live in Central Florida, I tell ya. We made a quick stop at the mall so I could pick up my race bib, shirt, and packet. The packet was a little disappointing, as there was only First Watch coffee inside, no other swag. Bummer! The shirt was super cute though, so that made up for it a little bit.

Untitled

The race fell on the same day as Daylight Savings Time, so we lost an hour of sleep on Saturday night which made Sunday morning come even earlier! I was nervous about my phone changing times, my alarm going off, the kids sleeping okay at Grammy’s house, finding parking, and getting there in time, so I had a pretty restless night of sleep. I ended up getting up and out the door on time, but the traffic was worse than I expected. I had to do a little jog to get the start line and I wasn’t waiting in the corral long before the race started.

Untitled

I texted Greg when the race started to try to buy him some time before having to wake the kids up (thank to DST). The race took us down very close to Grammy’s house so they all came to see me just after the 5K marker. It was so good to see them and definitely gave me something to look forward to as I was crossing the monster bridge. I only stopped to chat for about a minute, then it was time to turn around and head back to the bridge.

Untitled

As I was going over the bridge for the second time, the sun was finally coming up (thanks DST). It sure was pretty, but it was already getting hot.

Untitled

By mile 6, I had run the bridge twice and was ready for the rest of the course, which was flat! We ran down by the water and all the way down to the Ringling Brothers museum. It was a pretty course and there were two parts that were down and back so I was able to people watch and saw several moms from the running group who made the trip down too.

Untitled

Going into the race, I didn’t have a time goal in mind and knowing that I was going to stop and talk to Greg and the kids, I wanted to go out and just have a fun run. The problem is, once I start the race and the miles keep going by, I think about my pace and time a lot. After the first couple of miles, I knew I wanted to keep each mile under 11 minutes. I also dropped intervals so this was my first race since my very first half marathon that I was running straight through. I stopped and walked through the water stops since I wasn’t wearing my Camelbak, but other than that, I was running.

Untitled

I ended up finishing in 2:18:32 and my Garmin clocked my total moving time at 2:17:29, which is my second best half marathon to date. Considering I ran that bridge twice and this was my first race dropping intervals, I was pretty excited. This was my second best race after my PR run at Space Coast in November.

Untitled

The after party was great. I wish it wasn’t so hot or I would have indulged in more of the yummy breakfast food that was provided by First Watch, but nothing but oranges sounded good to me. Except the cold beer, of course.

Untitled

Two other great things about this race: the huge bling and the free race photos.
